  • Back in the day

Since 1643, farmers have brought their horses out of the stables at the end of winter. This tradition, known as Straô Rieën, includes a ride to the beach, where the horses’ legs are washed in seawater, believed to help heal wounds. Over the centuries, this has grown into a unique annual ritual deeply rooted in local history.

Traditionally, the horses are beautifully decorated, and a prize is awarded to the rider and horse with the most impressive decoration. Accompanied by a marching band, the decorated horses make their way to the beach in a long procession.
