Across the island, more and more companies are focusing on responsible use of energy and water, while embracing reuse and circular practices. These efforts are also reflected in the sustainability certifications you will find across Schouwen-Duiveland.

Blue Flag
The Blue Flag is an international eco-label awarded to clean, safe and well-managed beaches and marinas. Locations are assessed on criteria such as water quality, safety, environmental management and visitor facilities.
In 2025, seven locations on Schouwen-Duiveland have been awarded the Blue Flag. You will find them at the beach access points of Jan van Renesseweg and Wilhelminahoeve in Renesse, and at Vuurtorenpad in Nieuw-Haamstede. The marinas of Brouwershaven and Bruinisse, Watersports Association Den Osse, and the municipal harbour of Zierikzee have also received the Blue Flag.

Groene Strand Wimpel
The Groene Strandwimpel is a Dutch certification awarded to beaches that give extra attention to nature and sustainability. On Schouwen-Duiveland, the pennant can be found at Verklikker Beach near Renesse.
This beach is managed with extra care to create more space for plants and wildlife. While visiting Verklikker Beach, you may encounter nesting birds and seals, making it a special place where nature is given room to thrive.

Green Key
Green Key is the leading international sustainability certification for businesses in the tourism and leisure sector. Companies with a Green Key certification demonstrate their commitment to sustainability, corporate social responsibility, environmental management and the protection of nature in their surroundings.
To achieve this certification, businesses go beyond legal requirements and take additional steps to reduce their environmental impact. On Schouwen-Duiveland, twelve businesses have been awarded the Green Key, reflecting the island’s commitment to sustainable tourism.
Green Destinations
Since 2018, Schouwen-Duiveland has been certified by Green Destinations, an international programme that assesses destinations on their sustainability performance. The certification looks at a wide range of topics, including nature conservation, the local economy and quality of life.
Schouwen-Duiveland is one of only two destinations in the Netherlands to hold this certification at the highest level. The island has also been recognised several times in the international Green Destinations Top 100 Stories, including for the Harbour-to-Harbour cycling route.
What can you do to help?
During your visit to Schouwen-Duiveland, it’s easy to contribute to a more sustainable island. Often, it’s the small choices that make the biggest difference.
Choose accommodation or restaurants that are committed to sustainability, enjoy locally produced products, or take part in an activity that gives something back to the island. Across Schouwen-Duiveland, a variety of initiatives are organised, from beach clean-ups to local community projects. By making conscious choices, you can enjoy the island while helping to take care of what makes Schouwen-Duiveland so special.

Stay with care for the environment
A sustainable stay starts with the place where you spend the night. For example, choose accommodation with a Green Key certification. This international sustainability certification recognises businesses in the tourism sector that are committed to responsible practices, such as reducing water and energy consumption, separating waste and supporting local products and the surrounding environment.
You will also find a variety of small-scale accommodation that offers a close connection to nature and island life. From farm stays and charming B&Bs to cosy nature cottages, there are many ways to experience Schouwen-Duiveland at a slower pace.

Taste the flavours of the island
Sustainable choices can also be found in the island’s food culture. Enjoy local products during a picnic, barbecue or aperitif, featuring fresh vegetables, cheese and other products from local farms and farm shops. If you enjoy seafood, you can collect oysters and other shellfish yourself at various locations along the Oosterschelde. Complete the experience with a locally produced wine from De Kleine Schorre vineyard.
Prefer dining out? Visit one of the Green Key-certified beach pavilions in Renesse or choose a restaurant that works with local and seasonal ingredients, such as Restaurant D’Ouwe Smisse. It’s a great way to discover the flavours of the island while supporting local and sustainable businesses.

There are many ways to enjoy Schouwen-Duiveland while staying connected to nature. Start your day with a walk through the island’s landscapes or explore the area by bike at your own pace. The Harbour-to-Harbour Cycle Route, for example, takes you past several harbours while offering insight into the island and the people who live here.
Heading to the beach? The coast is a wonderful place to unwind in every season. Whether you visit in summer or during the quieter months, it is the perfect setting to enjoy nature, fresh sea air and wide-open views.
You can also make a positive contribution during your visit. Pick up litter you come across during a walk, bike ride or day at the beach, or join a local clean-up initiative such as the Schouwse Jutterdagen.
