De Slikken van Dijkwater

Discover the pristine natural beauty of the Slikken van Dijkwater, a unique bird reserve on the coast of the Grevelingen. This area consists of mudflats and a narrow, elongated shell bank that grows annually due to the movements of the water. The bare bank is a favorite breeding spot for birds such as the black-winged stilt, common tern, Arctic tern, and endangered little tern. During the winter months, grey plovers rest in large groups on the mudflats.

Although the Slikken van Dijkwater is not accessible to the public, it offers a serene sanctuary for indigenous bird species. However, the area is accessible to predators such as weasels, foxes, and martens. The mudflats remain covered with sea lavender due to the stormy winds in the winter months and the drought in the summer, making it an attractive place for birds.
