In the past, the area was a drifting plain, but over the years, Staatsbosbeheer has planted conifers and deciduous trees including oaks, birches, aspens, and balsam poplars.

The forest is rich in birds, butterflies, rabbits, roe deer, fallow deer, and wild Shetland ponies. In the fall, thousands of mushrooms bloom in the area, and in the ponds near the water extraction areas, dragonflies, seagulls, ducks, geese, and grebes live. The area is strictly protected, and the Kop van Schouwen, which includes Boswachterij Westerschouwen, the Meeuwenduinen, the Verklikkerduinen, and the Vroongronden, is a protected natural monument. Visitors can go to the excursion shed for information and exhibitions about the area.
