Gravensteen
Discover the rich history of Gravensteen, the former 'stone house' of the Count of Holland, Zeeland, and West Friesland. This impressive building, also known as the oldest prison in Zeeland, dates back to 1524 and has had various functions over the years. Despite the changes to the interior and exterior, the building remains impressive.
Images and texts have been carved by prisoners into the oak walls and doors of Gravensteen, the oldest of which dates back to 1577. The former cells offer a poignant glimpse into the harsh conditions in which the prisoners were held. Famous prisoners include the Dunkirk privateers and Jan Machielse van der Made, also known as Jan Rap.
