Blauwe Bolwerk

The Blauwe Bolwerk is an important piece of history in Zierikzee and dates back to the 16th century when the Harbor Canal was dug and the new harbor entrance needed protection. The Bolwerk is one of the two forts that were built at that time, of which only the Blauwe Bolwerk remains. It served as protection against attacks by the Spaniards from the water and is made of blue hardstone. The impressive structure is seven meters high and sixty meters long. In 1817, a passage was made to the Westhavendijk.
