The exhibition "Desolate Island" depicts the destruction and reconstruction of Schouwen-Duiveland after the 1953 North Sea flood.

The photos portray a desolate and devastated Schouwen-Duiveland after the 1953 disaster. At the same time, the reconstruction of agricultural areas and houses is also evident. These unique slides were taken by Leendert Jacobus Albrecht de Jonge in April 1954. Who was he, and why did he visit the island?

This exhibition features 35 selected photos that provide an overview of Schouwen and Duiveland in 1954. Additionally, a short film from June 1953, created by jhr. Albert van Citters (1905-2008), who served as the mayor of Burgh during those years, will be shown. He frequently embarked on boat trips across the flooded Schouwen land accompanied by various guests.
