With around 11,500 inhabitants, Zierikzee is truly a city on Schouwen-Duiveland. In 1248, Zierikzee's city rights were confirmed by Count William II of Holland. Zierikzee is a historic city, earning the name "Monument City" with its 569 monuments. Since 1971, it has also been designated as a protected cityscape. Of the six city gates, three are still fully intact, and many of the monuments, such as the city gates, can be visited during Open Monument Day. The most prominent landmark is the Sint-Lievensmonstertoren, also known as the "Dikke Toren" in colloquial terms. The tower stands 62 meters high but was originally intended to reach a height of 130 meters, which was never achieved. Next to the church tower is the Nieuwe Kerk, which is open for visitors. Further down is the old town hall, which now serves as the City Hall Museum, offering insights into the historical Zierikzee. Apart from its monuments, the city is known for its harbor and bustling city center. Throughout the city, you can find various restaurants and shops.
