Cornelia van Zijp-Bijlo: A Life Dedicated to Care
Cornelia Pieternella van Zijp-Bijlo was born on July 24, 1895, in Dreischor and passed away on her birthday in 1967 in Zierikzee. From 1929 to 1958, she worked as a district nurse for the Groene Kruis in Kerkwerve. Known for her dedication, she cared not only for Kerkwerve but also for Brouwershaven and Zonnemaire. At births, illnesses, and deaths, she arrived on her 1938 Cyrus Sachs motorcycle, with her little dog Robbie riding along. Cornelia was an emancipated and socially engaged woman. Widowed at a young age, she had to raise her four children alone. In 1955, she was awarded a royal decoration for her work.

Forever Honored
In honor of Cornelia van Zijp-Bijlo and all district nurses of the past, a statue will be unveiled in Kerkwerve. This artwork was created by Daniƫlle Orelio from Burgh-Haamstede, who specializes in bronze sculptures, ceramic garden statues, paintings, and jewelry. The Renesse Foundation aims to keep the memory of remarkable residents of Schouwen-Duiveland alive with this tribute.
