Noordwelle
Noordwelle owes its name to its location north of a dam, which at the time was called a welle, and which was used to dam a former creek. The now-disappeared Zuidwelle was located south of the dam. Although Noordwelle has few residents, it is a close-knit community with many activities and several annual events.
Ring Village
The ring village is arranged in a circle around Cornelius Church. This church, dating from 1450, was completely destroyed during the attack by the States troops on the Spanish occupation. In the seventeenth century, the church was rebuilt and now forms the centre of the village. At the edge of the ring, you will find a travalje, a replica of what it used to look like. Horses were once shod here.
Straô Rieën
Every year, several events take place, with Kunstschouw and Straô Rieën being the largest. At the end of winter, beautifully decorated horses ride in a grand procession to the beach during Straô Rieën. Once on the beach, the horses gallop and trot freely for a while before entering the sea. The tradition dates back many centuries. Today, the event attracts many participants and visitors each year, both from Schouwen-Duiveland and beyond.
