Welcome in Kerkwerve

In the pleasant village of Kerkwerve, the village center is arranged in a ring around the church. This centrally located church from 1900 sits on a slightly elevated mound, also known as a "werf". It is this feature that gave the village its name, Kerkwerve. Visit the village during Open Monument Day and experience the sounds of horses being shod at the farrier's shop (travalje).

Walk trough Kerkwerve

Take a stroll around the church and admire the historic buildings lining the Ring. Here, you'll also find the farrier's shop (travalje). This horseshoeing stall was used for shoeing horses, with the adjacent barn serving as shelter during bad weather. During Open Monument Day, the farrier's shop is operational, allowing visitors to witness and hear the process of horseshoeing. Further along, you'll come across a small statue of a woman on a motorcycle. This depicts resident Sister Zijp-van Bijlo (1895-1967), a district nurse in Kerkwerve who was famous in the village. Her approach on her JaWa motorcycle could be heard from afar during her house visits.
