Welcome in Sirjansland
Sirjansland is a small village located on Schouwen-Duiveland, situated along the Grevelingenmeer. It's colloquially referred to as Sturjalland or simply Sir. The surrounding area boasts several beautiful nature reserves ideal for hiking. Sirjansland was established in 1305 as a new polder, following significant losses in the Dreischor polder due to the Saint Agatha's Flood. The initiative to reclaim the new polder was led by Jan van Beaumont, a younger brother of Count William III of Holland and Zeeland. This is the origin of the village's name: 's-Heer Jansland.
De Slikken van Dijkwater
Discover the pristine natural beauty of the Slikken van Dijkwater, a unique bird reserve on the coast of the Grevelingen. This area consists of mudflats and a narrow, elongated shell bank that grows annually due to water movements. The bare bank is a favored breeding ground for birds such as the avocet, common tern, Arctic tern, and endangered little tern. During winter months, large flocks of Eurasian dotterels rest on the mudflats.
