Welcome in Zonnemaire

Zonnemaire is located in the northern part of Schouwen-Duiveland near the Grevelingenmeer and is primarily an agricultural center. Despite its small size, this ring village features lively amenities such as cafes and a restaurant. Take a moment to admire the beautiful houses with stepped and neck gables that surround the church. At the outskirts of the village, you'll find the windmill and a few dike houses, remnants of the old hamlet of Bommenede.

Bommenede en Zonnemaire

Zonnemaire derives its name from Sonnemare, the creek that separated Schouwen from the Hollandic island of Bommenede. Bommenede was strategically located at a point on the Grevelingen. Its vulnerable position by the sea resulted in frequent damage to its dikes and multiple floods. From 1684 onward, Bommenede was no longer protected from the sea. The island was eventually ceded to Zeeland in exchange for a ferry connection between Bommenede and Herkingen.
