Schouwen and Duiveland used to be two islands. A wide creek called Gouwe flowed between them. Ebb and flow created tidal creeks. One of these creeks ended in the Schouwen country at Brijdorpe, then a village with a church. When the polder was embanked in the 12th century, a dam was placed in the creek and a sluice was built in the dam to drain the polder water. A village had to be built around that dam. Brouwershaven was built on the dikes.
Brouwershaven grew into a beautiful little town where a lot of trade was done. Barrels of herring and madder (for the red dye) were loaded from the market into the ships in the harbour using a wooden crane and transported to Brabant, Rotterdam and Antwerp, among other places. But mussels, shrimps and beer also made a lot of money. And at the scales, people weighed grain, flour and metal. Nowadays, there is not much trade, but the remains of this trading town are still present and clearly visible.

Mill de Graanhalm (1847) is a corn-wood sawmill. It used to be exclusively a corn mill, but in 2003 a saw was installed at the bottom of the mill. This can saw whole logs with the help of wind or motor power. At the top of the mill, stone Zeeland flail wheat is ground into wholemeal flour. Next to the mill, you will find a pancake house with more than 30 different kinds of pancakes. Whole wheat pancakes are served from Zeeland Vlegel wheat. Environmentally friendly wheat grown in the region and milled at the mill.

The water, the storm, the silence… Zeeland is largely flooded after the night of February 1, 1953. This area in particular, Schouwen-Duiveland, Goeree Overflakkee, and Tholen, was severely affected. But the danger has not yet passed. In the afternoon, it is high tide again, and the water rises even higher than during the night. People therefore go onto the roofs, and many houses that had survived the night collapse. People drown now as well. Around five o'clock, it gets dark. Thousands of people, wet, cold, and thirsty, enter the second night. On the third day of February, the rescue efforts get well underway. Victims are evacuated by helicopters, and aid workers enter the disaster area with hundreds of ships.
