Nieuwerkerk
Welcome to Nieuwerkerk. Here, you can still experience the friendly atmosphere of a Duiveland village as you walk past its historic buildings. In the centre of the village, you will find the oldest church, dating from the 15th century. It has been through a great deal, from a fire in 1586 to a bombing during the Second World War, in which the tower was severely damaged. It has since been rebuilt. On 1 February 1953, during the North Sea Flood, Nieuwerkerk was the hardest-hit place in Zeeland. That night, 289 people lost their lives. Today, the village has around 2,700 inhabitants.

The village has many amenities, including a bakery, two large supermarkets, a DIY store, a greengrocer, a cheese shop, a flower shop, a bookshop, a thrift store and a drugstore.
Steenzwaan Creek
Seen enough historic buildings? Then head to Steenzwaan Creek. This is a remnant of the Zwemer, a watercourse between the Oosterschelde and the Gouwe. Due to the silting up of the water, only a creek remains today, surrounded by a nature reserve. Look through your binoculars for waders such as avocets, spoonbills, spotted redshanks and redshanks, as well as songbirds. In spring, you might even hear the whitethroat singing beautifully after its long journey back to the Netherlands from the south.
